As I finished my crazy workload, and stumbled into my casa, I walked in on my family watching what we love most ESPN! To my surprise I stood dumbfounded to hear that Derek Jeter “Mr. November” might not be a Yankee next year. I know, I know, Jeter is coming off his worst season since he made it to the Big Leagues, but he’s a Yankee icon! Jeter now 36, hit .270 with 10 homers, down from a .334 and 18 homers the previous season. His on-base percentage fell from .406 to .340 and his slugging average dropped from .465 to .370. Now that we got the numbers out of the way let’s talk what Jeter does bring to the team. Leadership is the first word that comes to mind. Jeter has been captain since 2003, and no one can question his commitment, or the fact that he wears the pinstripes well. Since Jeter entered the league in 1995, the Yankees have won five World Series titles. And with the Steinbrenners we all know winning it all is everything! The Yankees have offered Jeter a three-year contract worth $45 million. If you do the math, that’s $15 million a year, think about all Gillette Fusion he could buy! Yankees’ General Manager Brian Cashman stated earlier that Jeter is more than welcome to look for a better contact with a new team. I personally can’t imagine the Yankees without Jeter. I can still recall the play that made me fall head over heels for him. You know the game against Boston when he dove three rows deep to catch a pop fly cutting up his million-dollar face. Whatever happens I hope this issue is resolved in a timely matter. I would hate for this to carry over into per season. If Jeter does not return to the Yankees I hope he considers the Dodgers, at least then I’ll have more opportunities to see him play. One can only dream... right!
